Six Things to Know Before HIMSS20

Grant Barrick

Vice President of Marketing

The annual HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition is without a doubt the biggest event of the year in health IT. The HIMSS20 conference takes place March 9-13, 2020, returning to the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) in Orlando, FL. With an anticipated 40,000+ attendees, 1,300+ exhibitors, and 320+ education sessions– navigating your way through HIMSS, especially if it is your first time attending, can be very overwhelming.

Lucky for you, we put together helpful tips that you should know before attending HIMSS, so you make the most out of your time in Orlando.

1. Reach out to key prospects before

As we mentioned, HIMSS is one of the industry’s biggest conferences of the year (if not the biggest), with anyone and everyone from health IT attending. With everyone from health IT in one place, HIMSS is the perfect time get as many face-to-face meetings with high priority prospects and customers as possible. To make the most out of your time, we recommend reaching out and scheduling meetings with prospects prior to the show. Given how crazy everyone’s schedule is during the week, pre-scheduling meetings will ensure you have time saved on both your calendar’s and will help you plan and organize your time at the show.

2. Pick up your badge Convention Center

With 40,000+ anticipated attendees, it’s safe to assume you will be waiting in line almost everywhere you go. You can save yourself immense time by picking up your registration badge before you get to the Convention Center. For those flying into Orlando, we highly recommend picking up at the Orlando International Airport (MCO) – located by baggage claim. Other badge pickup locations include: the Hyatt Regency Orlando, Caribe Royale, Rosen Centre, and Rosen Plaza.

3. Download the mobile app

Be sure to download the HIMSS mobile app (iOS and Android) to stay up-to-date with the latest information on education sessions and networking events. In addition, the app includes an interactive conference map to help you navigate through the convention center. We love it for the interactive exhibit show floor map, which allows you to directly search the floor by exhibitor name. This makes navigating the show floor a breeze for in-booth meetings, rather than wandering the 5+ halls that make up the show floor in the Convention Center.

4. Wear comfortable shoes

With all the exhibitors to talk with, education sessions to hear, and networking events to attend, you will be on your feet for most of your time at HIMSS. We highly recommend striving for comfortable shoes that you can last in all day. It’s common to see athletic shoes and sneakers on the show floor. And, from our team’s own personal experience, be sure your shoes are broken in prior to HIMSS. You don’t want blisters on your heels the first day of the conference.

5. Use shuttles & plan for travel time

HIMSS provides complimentary shuttles that run between the convention center, official HIMSS hotels, and the Orlando International Airport (MCO). Using the shuttle is a great way to save money and time. Plus, since shuttles are provided through HIMSS, the buses have an exclusive drop-off location, that is closed off to other transportation services (Lyft) and gets you right in front of the exhibit hall.

In addition, whether you’re taking a complementary shuttle or using your own transportation, we strongly advise you to plan extra time for travel. With 45,000 attendees, traffic near the convention center gets extremely busy at peak times (exhibit hall opening and exhibit hall closing times). We recommend adding (at least) an additional hour for travel time, especially when traveling in the morning (including transportation via complementary shuttle).

6. Check out the HIMSS Interoperability ShowcaseTM

The HIMSS Interoperability Showcase is an all-in-one comprehensive exhibition space that showcases, in real-time, the latest technology and products that are exchanging and using data to solve for interoperability challenges in health IT. Check out the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase to observe real-time use case demonstrations, interact one-on-one with exhibitors, and gain insights on interoperability trends from industry leaders.
