Digital Agency Identifies Solution to Healthcare Industry Barriers
"I connected with a Datica employee ten minutes after making a request. That level of support is unmatched anywhere else."Bryan Powell, Founder and CEO, Metabahn
CASE IN FACT
An Alabama-based agency of developers and designers is determined to bring open source tools to healthcare. Metabahn, headquartered in Huntsville, works with clients to turn ideas into solutions. Companies work with Metabahn’s product team on custom apps, Web, mobile, and other digital products. Metabahn developers encountered an immediate need for a HIPAA compliant infrastructure when they began working with a local genomics client.
CHALLENGE: Finding a HIPAA Compliant Vendor
In 2015, the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology approached Metabahn to take on Genome Gateway, a new project which involved developing a Web-based portal to manage patient and clinic interactions. Their goal—to onboard new patients and simplify information gathering. The first meeting with HudsonAlpha proved the project would be complex. Metabahn developers recognized an immediate need for both a HIPAA compliant infrastructure to handle the Protected Health Information (PHI) throughout the system, and a trusted and reliable partner to manage the infrastructure so they could focus on their core competencies.
Healthcare clients posed a special hurdle for Metabahn. Compliance barriers inherent in the industry limited Metabahn’s interest in healthcare. As a result, creating a HIPAA compliant infrastructure held little interest for its developers. However, Metabahn had an ongoing relationship with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and they didn’t want to turn away the Genome Gateway project. First step: Metabahn needed to find a HIPAA compliant infrastructure vendor.
Metabahn Founder and CEO, Bryan Powell was able to narrow down his selection quickly, discovering that Datica Compliant Cloud was a HIPAA compliant solution ideal for his team due to its emphasis on open source and an easy deployment model. “We are big advocates for easy deployment and Datica Compliant Cloud is structured in a way that our team also chooses to deploy which is awesome. It quickly became the only option for us.”
Datica engineer, Andrew Wagner, shares his experience working with the development agency. He found deployment for the agency to be similar to other deployments. Wagner explains, “Metabahn, like other key customers, now spends zero time on the infrastructure-related tasks required for HIPAA compliance. This allows them to focus on building their application and maintaining it for their customers.”
As a result, Metabahn developers delivered their first HIPAA compliant project with a reliable support team behind the agency. Powell points to one interaction as an example. “I connected with a Datica employee ten minutes after making a request,” explains Powell. “That level of support is unmatched anywhere else.” Wagner recalls another support situation, “At one point we had an email exchange about a code issue. In under one hour the deployment code had been fixed.”

The Metabahn team found a shared vision with Datica around openness, support, and simple deployments. This helped them determine that the the Datica Compliant Cloud was the right fit for their team. Powell now has the confidence that entering the healthcare space is the right move and looks forward to working with customers on healthcare solutions that make a difference.
“We’re excited to finally break into this market — a market that we’ve worked on the outskirts of for years, but were unable to fully embrace due to the compliance issues,” says Powell. “It’s exciting to put our expertise into solving these much needed problems in the healthcare space.”
